Candidate for the position of Myth Society - Communications Officer

Billy Kane (LAB)

  1. Why do you want to stand?
Myth has been a huge part of my first semester of university. I have been and continue to take part in multiple D&D games and meeting many Myth members. As someone who is approachable, good at communicating and with experience networking I felt applying for Communications officer would give me a chance to use these skills to aid the society.

  2. How would you represent Staffordshire University Students?
I’d make sure committee members feel like they have a say in the society and are represented respectfully and professionally. I want members to feel like they are listened to and feel confident to come forward with ideas and issues they may have with the society.

  3. If you could change three things about anything to do with being a student at Staffordshire University, what would they be?
    • Making it easier for students to create smaller, niche societies that might encourage more people to get involved that are currently not in any societies.
    • Cheaper rent at student accommodation, a lot of external accommodation is much cheaper and better placed.
    • More competitive pricing in Union shops and venues, helping encourage more on-campus activity

  4. What do you think is the biggest issue facing Staffordshire university?
Keeping students interested and involved in their studies and getting them to study in their own time is always an issue for any educational establishment. At university with many young students experiencing their first few steps into independence, its easy for them to get distracted with university lifestyle.

  5. What do you think is the biggest issue facing the Students Union in the next 12 months?
I imagine keeping students engaged in and constantly increasing the number of people joining societies is a large focus for the Union. On top of this, putting on events at LRV and Ember that appeal to students is another way the Union will be trying to encourage a wider involvement in on-campus social activities.

  6. Please tell us about a priority campaign that you would run if elected?
I would like to improve communication between members and the committee on what they want to see in the society, new games they want to play, new materials they want/need etc. This should encourage even more game sessions to be played by society members. More communication should hopefully encourage members to branch out from their own games and join more social events to help them network with their peers.

  7. Why does that campaign matter to students?
Members should want and expect their Committee to listen to them and try and get their requests seen to and questions answered. On top of that, giving students more incentives to reach out to other members will help them find like-minded people which.

  8. What can you offer that no-one else can?
My work experience and previous education has given me great communication skills, both professional and casual. This means I’ll be simultaneously an approachable member of the society and a good spokesperson on behalf of it. I also have experience dealing with private and confidential information, safeguarding, health and safety and other important aspects of working with/on behalf of others.

  9. Sum up your election campaign in less than 140 characters
I want all members to feel like they can put forward ideas for what they would like to see in Myth and offer a more diverse selection of tabletop games and events.
