Start a new activity

If you have an idea for a new club or society, or maybe a one off event, then we can help.

What we can offer

We can provide you with advice and assistance from our staff, admin support and use of office facilities.

We can help you with book meeting rooms, sports facilities & transport, depending upon what you need.

We can provide promotional opportunities through the Students' Union's website.

We can also provide initial start up funding of up to £100, which can be used to trial and promote your activity and gauge the level of interest from other students.

Things you need to note

Your activity or event must be open to all students and publicised as such.

The aims and objectives of the activity must be in accordance with those of the Union, and be sufficiently different to those of existing activities to merit a new Club or Society being formed. Applications will not be considered from existing Clubs and Societies who should support activities from their sponsorship account or if appropriate apply to the Activity Development Fund.

The committee and the activities that are offered must operate within an equal opportunities framework – meaning that the activity must be open to all students without exception. Racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other form of negative discrimination, on any grounds, will not be tolerated.

If your group is of a political or campaigning nature, we will need to have further conversations with you around what the Union, and therefore any Club or Society, is legally allowed to do (as we are in the process of registering as a charity).

What to do next

Complete a Start Up Funding Application Form giving a brief outline of your project (anything from a conference or tournament to a workshop or taster event) and the support you need and submit this online.

You will get a decision within 2 weeks (10 working days) of your application being submitted.

If things work out and you want to set up as an official club or society then you can begin to complete the Sponsorship Application process towards the end of the academic year, which once approved will enable you to recruit new members the following September at the Clubs & Societies Fair and run as a fully fledged Club or Society!
