Staffordshire University Pokémon League!
Coming 11th of January 2025, Staffordshire University Pokémon Society is excited to host the Staffs Pokémon League! This will be an all-out competition open to students and non-students alike, following official Video Game Championship (VGC) rulesets. Details
The tournament will be played in person on Nintendo Switch consoles using Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. We’ll be using a Swiss Rounds format, ensuring that a loss doesn’t mean the end of your time in the competition. Additionally, we will be using Open Teamsheet rulings, meaning players will need to submit a full summary of their teams to allow for fair competitive play on both sides. We plan to provide a teamsheet form to fill digitally. More information will be posted closer to the event day, so we recommend you join the Tournament’s Discord server (linked below) to stay informed.
We will be following Regulation H rules, meaning that Restricted Legendaries, Sub Legendaries, Mythicals and Paradox forms are banned from use in the tournament.
VGC rules are standard for competitive play, and include the Item and Species clauses, banning players from bringing duplicates of the same item or Pokémon. This helps to forge diversity and variation amongst teams, encouraging creative use of team members and items to help achieve victory. This format also follows a Bring 6, Pick 4 rule and all battles will take place as 4v4s. Furthermore, the semi-finals and finals will consist of Best of 3 battles for a climactic finale!
The top winners will receive cash prizes of up to £50 as well as official Pokémon Merchandise!
Tickets for entry are priced at £5 each, with a discounted price of only £2 for registered Staffs Pokémon Society members. We welcome Staffordshire University students and non-students alike, including (but not limited to) students from other local universities. Our event is open to the public, but you do have to be 18 or over to compete.
This event will be taking place on our Stoke-On-Trent Campus, in the LRV. We suggest you arrive at 10am at the earliest for an 11am start time.
Ticket purchases open on the 30th of September and close on the 14th of December. This is to give people ample time to buy a membership and claim their discount. Once available for purchase, they can be bought online through our page on the Students' Union website. As we need to know in advance how many competitors will be in the tournament, tickets must be bought before the start date. We will not be able to accept walk-ins on the day. We have limited spaces available, at a maximum of 160 entrants.
We ask that you double check your consoles and chargers, ensuring that they’re in good condition to avoid faults and hazards. We also advise that you bring your own refreshments, but Verve will be open next door for hot food and drinks, and the surrounding area is full of shops and takeaways.
