Insurance
Insuring your car is LEGAL requirement in England. Before you can put your car on the road it has to be insured or placed under SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) You may end up putting a SORN on your car if it is not drivable and needs repairing or it is not going to be used on the road for a long period of time. Otherwise… Your car must be insured. Sorning your car can be done here
Insurance can be a very expensive process for a first time driver as you will have 0 no claims benefit (This builds up over time and lowers your insurance from not being involved in any road collisions/accidents).
Your insurance is based off multiple things, these can range from what year the car was made/the current value of the car, the engine size/speed of the car, the address the car is registered too (Crime ratings effect this) and also the amount of no claims discount you hold.
Make sure to look around for car insurance, as you can save 100’s of pounds by searching the market. Use comparison sights like Compare The Market to see what deals are best for you. When applying for car insurance you’ll be asked to fill in a whole load of details. So make sure you have everything to hand, including the car logbook, the cars main details (Year, Engine Size, number of doors) and your driving license.
You’ll be asked questions around what type of policy you’d like as well as additional things such as breakdown cover.
The three policy types are –
· Third Party – This covers the cost of any damage done to another person’s property – This is the most important as if you have a collision with another driver, you are covered in damages which could lead to maintenance/repair costs or a write off (car is unusable and must be replaced)
· Third Party fire and theft – This is as explained above alongside the car protected fro Fire Damage along with the car/belongings being stolen.
· Fully comprehensive – Also referred to as “Fully Comp” covers any damage involved – That being injury to you or external parties, repair/replacement to either parties car, and again fire and theft protection. Fully Comp insurance is usually the recommend to go for as it means that you are covered in all forms.
