Maintenance & Cleaning | Housing

It’s important to look after your home and keep it cleaned to a reasonable standard. You should leave your home in the same way that you found it, so it’s important to keep on top of things like cleaning. YouTube is full of channels dedicated to looking after your home or you can have a read of these 50 top-tips from Good Housekeeping

If you’re renting, it’s your responsibility to:

  • undertake minor repairs yourself, like changing lightbulbs or fuses;
  • use the fixtures and fittings correctly, like not blocking a toilet by flushing wipes or sanitary products;
  • reporting repairs that need completing to your landlord;
  • giving access for any repair work that needs to be completed.

Check your tenancy agreement for any other terms on your responsibilities as it might include things like painting and decorating.

If repairs need to be completed by your landlord, you must give them access to do this. They have a right to access your home to assess what work is required and then to carry it out. Unless it’s an emergency, they must give you at least 24 hours’ notice in writing.

Kitting out a new home can seem a daunting prospect, but some properties come fully furnished or partly furnished. You should check what this includes with your landlord before signing in to a contract. If you need to buy items for your new home, you could ask your friends or family or use Charity Shops or Facebook Market Place for good deals.
