Notice Period | Housing
It’s important to check what type of tenancy you have as it will either be a fixed-term tenancy (ending on a specific date) or a periodic/ rolling tenancy which just continues on a month-to-month or week-to-week basis.
With a fixed-term, you need to pay rent until at least the end of the fixed-term. You can only end your fixed term tenancy early if your agreement says you can or by getting your landlord to agree to end your tenancy. This agreement might include a break clause, which means you can end the tenancy early. Check your agreement for details.
With a periodic/ rolling tenancy, you can end this agreement at any time by giving your landlord notice that you are leaving and you have to pay rent up to the end of the notice period. Unless otherwise stated in your agreement, you should give your landlord 1 month’s notice if your tenancy is on a month-by month basis or 4 weeks’ notice if your tenancy is on a week-by-week basis.
