Proud to be Staffs Story: Ben Woodrow-Hirst
A proud student told us...
'In 2022, I received tragic news. At the time, Ben was my lecturer on the ODP course. From the day the news broke, Ben was there for me and went above and beyond to offer the support I needed. Looking back, I do not even think I would have graduated a few months ago without his support. He offered advice, guidance and got me in touch with the relevant support services when my mental health took a real dip. He always made it clear that he wasn’t a counsellor, but just the fact he listened to me, and allowed me to understand the situation in my own time. Not only did he get my through my degree and see a light at the end of the tunnel, he helped me understand my new diagnosis of autism and ADHD. He hosts D&D sessions every week, which has been amazing for the mental health of many of those who attend. I’ve now graduated, but will be returning next month to pursue a masters in Human Factors for Patient Safety. Again, this is something that Ben has supported me with and gave me the confidence to actually believe in myself and enable myself to create a future that I’m looking forward to. I know full well that the ODP students are in good hands and I believe Ben deserves to be recognised. I did email the university Dean to share my story, but when I saw nominations for the award, I knew I had to share it again. I will never be able to thank Ben enough, for creating a safe space, the level of professionalism and support, and as I sit here writing this (getting a little emotional), I do not think I would be here to write this, let alone graduate and about to start on a masters without Ben. Happy to be contacted about this if you require any more info!'
Thank you Ben for making a positive difference for students here at Staffs.
We hope that you are as proud of your story as we are. However, if you would prefer the Students' Union to no longer display your story on our website, please email union@staffs.ac.uk and a member of our friendly team will be happy to help.
