Proud to be Staffs Story: Ross Mountford
Student, School of Creative Arts and Engineering
As a student, iit can sometimes be easy to forget that our professional staff teams are actually human beings, and from time to time, require our support. Ross, through being a genuine and kind friend, provided excellent support for our nominator in a time of need. Thank you Ross, for making us Proud to be Staffs.
Ross Mountford's Story
"Ross is not a student on the course that I teach on, but I have helped Ross whenever he has needed me as a general support. I have recently had a diagnosis of breast cancer, and I'm currently on sickness absence whilst I am having my treatment. One particular evening early March, I got very upset in my car, once I had left my office for the day. Ross happened to be walking past and waved, only to realise that I was crying. Rather than walk past and not know what to say, he knocked on my window, opened the door and comforted me while I cried. He then came and sat in the front seat of my car and talked with me for around 20 minutes until I'd calmed down enough to drive home. I can only describe this act of kindness from Ross as exceptional. Many people, including some of my own family members have not known what to say to me during this time, so to have a student that I'm not directly daily involved with, show me such kindness and understanding is really rather humbling and makes me very proud to know him. Ross didn't worry about any student/lecturer boundaries that might have made him continue to walk past. He saw that as another human I needed some support. Ross is a truly wonderful young man and a credit to our university. He makes me Proud to be Staffs. "
