As the President of University of Staffordshire Students’ Union and a proud Nigerian, I am excited to share a special message with you as we celebrate Nigeria Independence Day on October 1st.

It is another day in the History of Nigeria to celebrate a day that marks our country’s journey to freedom and self-determination. On this day in 1960, Nigeria officially gained independence from colonial rule, and it’s a moment to reflect on our growth and achievements as a nation.

This day serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of our leaders and citizens who fought for our rights. We honour the contributions of figures who paved the way for our independence, showcasing the spirit of unity and strength in Nigeria.

Nigeria is home to over 250 ethnic groups and varying dishes, each contributing to our rich cultural diversity and unity. From the rhythmic beats of Afrobeats to the delicious taste of Jollof rice, there’s so much to explore. I encourage you to embrace this diversity by trying out some Nigerian dishes or listening to our music.

As a Nigerian studying here in the UK, Nigeria Independence Day reminds me of the resilience of our people and the importance of celebrating our heritage. I encourage all students, regardless of your background, to reflect on your own culture and join us in this celebration.

I encourage you to share your experiences related to Nigeria Independence Day and what it means to you. Feel free to reply to this email or engage with us on our social media platforms.

Thank you for taking the time to celebrate this important day with us. Happy Nigeria Independence Day to everyone!

Precious Ogbein
President, University of Staffordshire Students’ Union
