A proud student told us...
"The Computing Society has created meaningful partnerships that have improved the University’s relationships with local employers, famous companies, inclusive communities and accreditation boards including Verkada, Bet365, Synectics Solutions, SheCanCode, BCS, TechSkills UK, Bright Network, Double11 and Gradcracker. These companies have stated feedback that after working with us they’d love to support the University further and create contacts with current staff. Our impact is beyond just computing for these partnerships to improve diversity, teaching and employability. Working directly with lecturers, department leads, Academic skills team and Careers and alumni at Staffs to come up with new ways to bridge the gap between academia and industry including the creation of a mentorship program dedicated to creating bonds between current and past students to share Academic struggles and real world expectations. The society delivered an event dedicated to informing students about everything they need to excel in academia and bridging the gap between higher education after listening to feedback from lecturers about the things students lose out marks on.
The society has proactively worked to diversify technology, post opportunities to represent the underrepresented, encourage students to take on new challenges and opportunities.
- When the games programming students informed us of their struggle to book rooms, we sorted study sessions for them.
- When Comp Science students said they struggle with Python, we made a complete guide and introductory session for them.
- When students mentioned they don’t know where to start with CV’s, we interviewed recruiters and used their feedback to deliver sessions on CVs.
- When students struggled to network, we brought in employers and past alumni to boost them.
- When students stated they struggled to find opportunities, we partnered with Bright Network and Gradcracker to send them roles and events directly.
- When students stated that they were stressed we put on campaigns and events to improve their mental health, talk about it and have fun.
Everything we do is for our members as they are at the heart of us. This has helped us hit over 115 members! We revived a society that had no events for the past couple years to over 15 in less than 8 months. We volunteered to support careers fairs, raised money, became DBS verified for STEM Ambassadorship.
We collaborated with different societies across STEM and communities to help everyone feel together and supported. These included with the NCSS, "I'm a computer scientist get me out of here" and even co-op Academy.
We supported welcome days, fairs, move-ins.
We prepped our members for interviews, we helped and looked over their CVs and portfolios. We helped them make connections that have secured many roles for their placements, graduation and even summer internships!
We put sustainability first, opting for online resources, encouraging recycling, becoming carbon literacy certified and made campaigns to reduce e-waste emissions with brilliant results.
We inspired new passions and interests in technology members didn’t have before through fun educational sessions and workshops. We empowered our own members, masters students and staff to gain the confidence to deliver their passions to our members and improve their public speaking skills and growth while upskilling our own members and ourselves. Everything we do is in the name of our members and it pays off seeing them smile after every event. It pays off to get those little happy messages that our members landed their dream roles, that they tackled a challenge they’ve always had, that they made friends. This all helped us become the first society to get all 5 badges in the first term! Our committee and members are passionate and that fuel is never going out."
Thank you Computing Society for making a positive difference for students here at Staffs.
We hope that you are as proud of your story as we are. However, if you would prefer the Students' Union to no longer display your story on our website, please email union@staffs.ac.uk and a member of our friendly team will be happy to help.
