For the month of December we have Adrian Mudhir! Adrian is the Course Rep for BSc (Hons) Computer Science - Level 5.
Instead of us explaining it, I'll let Adrian! This is what Adrian passed along to fellow Reps and the Students in his cohort.
The Issue
Students at the London campus have raised concerns about inconsistencies in teaching standards, resource quality, and accessibility compared to the Stoke campus. Modules such as Commercial Computing and Digital Technologies have differing assessment formats, poorly structured assignment briefs, and missing Blackboard content, such as weeks 4–6 and Oracle database links. Outdated or inaccurate materials, like slides referencing the university's TEF Gold rating despite its current TEF Silver status, further highlight the discrepancies. Additionally, some lecturers have been reported for unprofessional behavior, though some lecturers have been praised for their high-quality teaching and support. Feedback processes and Blackboard layouts have also been flagged as confusing and inconsistent, negatively impacting the student experience.
Affected Students
All level 5 Computing students in London.
The Outcome
After the internal investigation I led alongside Aura, Brad Gizzi, Joseph Knight, Connor Clarke, and Sam Baxter, we achieved several positive changes in response to the concerns raised. Lecturers have improved their conduct, adopting a more professional and respectful tone with students. The slides flagged for quality issues have been updated, and despite the initial absence of an assignment brief, we successfully obtained one for our module. Additionally, the quality of other modules has improved, and lecturers were addressed about their teaching and professionalism, resulting in noticeable changes to content delivery. The teaching materials have significantly improved and so far the conduct has improved with the lecture in question. I will include the brief we didn't get at the start of our assignment that we finally got on week 11. They also stated they won't have Commercial Computing as a module next year after increase student dissatisfaction!
