Hey everyone! With Halloween just around the corner, it's time to get those creative juices flowing and prepare for our epic pumpkin carving event on Wednesday! To help you achieve pumpkin-carving greatness, the Students' Union has put together some top tips to ensure your jack-o'-lantern is the envy of all.

Before You Start:

  • Pumpkin Picking: Choose a fresh, firm pumpkin free of bruises or soft spots. A sturdy stem and a flat bottom are also helpful for stability.

  • Tool Time: We'll provide the tools, but it's good to know what you'll be working with. Expect to see carving knives, scoops, pokers, and maybe even some stencils.

Carving 101:

  • Safety First: Always cut away from yourself and keep your fingers clear of the blade. If you're unsure about a cut, ask for assistance.
  • Bottom's Up: Cut your opening at the bottom of the pumpkin, not the top. This helps prevent the sides from caving in and makes it easier to insert a candle.
  • Gut It Out: Scoop out all the seeds and pulp. The cleaner the inside, the longer your masterpiece will last.
  • Thin the Walls: For intricate designs, thin the pumpkin walls from the inside where you'll be carving. This makes it easier to cut through.
  • Stencil Savvy: Use a stencil or draw your design directly onto the pumpkin. Simple shapes and bold lines often work best.
  • Carving Techniques: Experiment with different techniques like etching, shaving, and creating 3D effects for a unique look.

Keeping it Fresh:

  • Petroleum Jelly: Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the cut edges to help prevent your pumpkin from drying out.
  • Cool Storage: Store your carved pumpkin in a cool, dry place until it's time to display it.

Beyond the Basics:

  • Think Outside the Box: Don't be afraid to get creative! Carve geometric patterns, pop culture icons, or even your university logo.
  • Light it Up: Experiment with different light sources like LED tea lights, string lights, or even glow sticks for a spooky glow.

Most Importantly: Have fun and let your creativity shine! We can't wait to see your amazing creations at the event.

Remember: The pumpkin carving event is on Wednesday, the 23rd, from 5 p.m. in Verve. See you there!
