The Computing Society are all about tech - but there's growing awareness of the environmental impact that our tech habits are having upon the environment. The society are keen to help spread the message and help you to reduce your carbon digital footprint and clean out your inbox.

The society have the following top tips to help you to declutter your inbox and make your digital habits more sustainable.

  • Carbon Footprint: According to Mike Berners-Lee in 'The Carbon Footprint of Everything’ (2020), emails emit a carbon emission ranging from 0.03g to 26g.
  • Comparative Impact: Average email usage is like driving a small petrol car for around 128 miles each year.

To minimise your digital carbon footprint, try out these sustainable practices:

  1. Delete old emails: Declutter you inbox by removing emails you no longer need.
  2. Unsubscribe: Remove yourself from annoying mailing lists!
  3. Selective Subscriptions: Only subscribe to services you truly want.
  4. Update Lists: Ensure your mailing lists are up to date.
