This weekend, myself and Olayemi attended Stoke-on-Trent Pride with University and Union colleagues in Hanley Park! It was an enlightening and joyous experience for us as international students with our own cultural values, and we wanted to share the experience with you in this blog!
The day began early as we arrived at 9 AM to set up our stall, which would remain open until 6 PM. From the moment we arrived, the park was already active with excitement and anticipation. The vibrant colours, lively music, parade, and enthusiastic participants created a welcoming and celebratory atmosphere that was truly infectious. It became more exciting around midday, when the event officially opened. Engaging with visitors - especially children and youngsters - who had different coloured flags on their faces and in their hands was a delightful experience, as everyone was representing themselves with pride. The kids were eagerly moving from stall to stall to collect freebies! Their curiosity and enthusiasm were a reminder of the importance of fostering an inclusive environment from a young age.
Through interactions with some of the community, we were able to get some information about the LGBTQ+ community, helping our own awareness and understanding. The sense of community at the event was palpable, with various groups and organizations coming together, united by a common goal: to stand up for equality and celebrate diversity!
It was heartwarming to witness the openness and warmth of everyone at the event. People from different backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life gathered to show their support. This collective spirit of inclusivity was truly inspiring and highlighted the strength that comes from unity. Seeing everyone so open and welcoming made us appreciate the importance of supporting each other's rights and identities. It was a powerful reminder that, despite our cultural differences, we all share a common humanity. The event reinforced the idea that embracing diversity enriches our lives and strengthens our communities. As international students, it was particularly meaningful to see how a community can come together to celebrate individuality while fostering a sense of belonging.
We were grateful for the opportunity to be part of such an event and to contribute to our Union's mission of advocating for inclusivity. Participating in the Pride event was a learning experience that broadened our perspectives and enriched our understanding of diversity and equality.
