This week in the Spotlight, we are introducing a fairly new place where things are dark and scary! Yes, we are talking about Staffs new Goth Society! The society is headed by the manager Aleksandra Limanowska, Finance officer – Taiga Hookey, Communications officer – Peter Conroy and Wellbeing and Inclusion Officer - Caitlin Richardson.
The Goth Society aims to spread information and foster participation within the gothic subculture that emerged in the 1980s in London and continues to have a dedicated following today. Emphasising the importance of community within the subculture, the society endeavours to provide a space for individuals with similar interests to convene, as well as serve as a starting point for newcomers seeking to explore the subculture.
Originating in London with the establishment of The Batcave club and the emergence of influential bands such as Bauhaus, the gothic subculture has since expanded to encompass various genres, including Industrial hardcore music, darkwave, and death rock, often categorised under the post-punk label.
Events and Activities of Goth Society
Meetings of the society take place weekly at the LRV from 7 to 9 PM, albeit not in a graveyard setting, as one might expect. While currently focusing on showcasing goth music and movies, future plans of the society include organising DIY sessions to promote the creative aspect of goth culture.
Past events have featured screenings of films like 'The Crow' and themed nights dedicated to bands like The Cure, with future events scheduled for Depeche Mode. Additionally, the society plans to launch a pin sale to promote its values and music, with details forthcoming.
Why join Goth Society?
Membership benefits include a sense of community and camaraderie, as well as free entry to all weekly events for a nominal fee of £1.50.
The overarching goal of the society is to raise awareness about the Gothic subculture and encourage involvement, particularly among individuals who may have felt marginalised due to their unconventional interests. Additionally, the society aims to provide a supportive environment for existing members to forge meaningful connections. Despite its small size, the society fosters a close-knit community spirit.
While still in its early stages, the society remains open to collaboration with other groups and eagerly seeks opportunities to create inclusive and enjoyable experiences for all interested parties.
