So what do they do?
Staffordshire Uni Racing is a Formula Student team that builds a car from design concept and takes it to track at Silverstone in July where we compete against other Formula Student teams.
This also involves costing every part of the car as well as creating a business plan which is presented to judges at the competition. The team has many departments including powertrain, vehicle dynamics, driveline, data acquisition, aerodynamics, chassis, costings, business and media & sponsorship.
As well as building the car, they also have fun social days out which include going karting and attending sim racing sessions at Game Grid. Furthermore, they spend many days testing the car on outdoor karting tracks.
Activities & Events
The team has weekly meetings held on Wednesday afternoons in which they discuss what everyone has designed, what has been manufactured and what tasks need to be completed going forward. However, the team is not just limited to weekly meetings as we are constantly in the workshop working on building the car.
In addiction to the dynamic events, they also participate in static events, including business and cross presentations. They also have dedicated sponsorship, marketing and media departments that all work to secure, support and promote their efforts.
As a team, they have had many achievements. This includes securing 4th place overall at Formula Student UK 2024 out of 100 universities and getting 1st in the acceleration shootout. They are also proud to have achieved winning the ‘Supporting Staffs Superstars Award’ at the We Are Staffs 2024 Awards.

Open to Staffordshire students, SUR is a dedicated team of highly committed members; students with various skillsets and from differing areas of study.
The team is located in K036 in the Dwight building on the Stoke on Trent campus. Don’t hesitate to pop in and ask any questions.

Being a part of SUR has opened doors I never even imagined walking through. The team welcomed me with open arms helping me develop my skills as an engineer, machinist, and presenter. Karting socials get quite competitive but worth attending. Through SUR I have found my home away from home. It has been the highlight of my time at university, and it is something that I would recommend to anyone looking to learn new things.
