Staffordshire University is gearing up to unveil its eagerly anticipated Citizenship Module, a comprehensive educational resource covering vital topics such as consent, healthy relationships, gender-based violence, active bystander intervention, and unconscious bias. Lead by Len Stuart, Vice President 2022-2024, and by Hannah Blackburn, President 2021 -2023, the module represents a significant milestone in the university's commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive campus environment.

The journey towards the creation of this pioneering resource has been marked by dedication and perseverance. Initiated by Len Stuart in August 2022, the development process has involved meticulous research, collaboration with colleagues here and at other institutions, and extensive content creation efforts. Now, after months of hard work, the module is ready to launch in March, after gaining univeristy executive approval.

The urgency of addressing issues surrounding consent and related topics cannot be overstated. Disturbing statistics from a 2018 survey conducted by Revolt Sexual Assault and the Student Room underscore the prevalence of sexual violence among students. The survey revealed that a staggering 62% of students and recent graduates had experienced sexual violence, with 70% of female respondents and 26% of male respondents reporting such incidents. These findings serve as a stark reminder of the pressing need for comprehensive education and awareness initiatives to combat sexual violence on university campuses.

By collating insights from various research sources, lived experience and partnering with other organisations, the Citizenship Module aims to address existing educational gaps and equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate complex issues surrounding consent and healthy relationships. Through engaging and interactive content, students will have the opportunity to explore topics such as understanding consent, promoting respectful relationships, identifying and challenging gender-based violence, intervening as active bystanders, and recognising and mitigating unconscious biases.

With the launch of the Citizenship Module on the horizon, Staffordshire University reaffirms its commitment to prioritising the well-being and safety of its students. As the university continues to champion initiatives aimed at tackling sexual violence and promoting positive social change, the impact of this groundbreaking educational resource is poised to resonate far beyond the campus walls.
