We're thrilled to announce that we now have 83 groups, including the revived OMG Radio under a fresh new committee. Our student leaders have successfully organised an impressive 816 events, all promoted on our What's On webpage. We also have 44 enthusiastic sub-committee members providing valuable support. We're incredibly proud of the dedication of our 275 committee leaders, with 253 already completing their essential committee training.
During National Student Volunteering Week in February, we ramped up our communications, highlighting the many benefits and diverse opportunities available. It's inspiring to see the impact our students are making, with a remarkable 1,832 volunteering hours logged so far this academic year!
We've also received 65 student ‘We Are Staffs’ nominations recognising members of our community, and some have even been featured in popular news articles and these articles are averaging amongst the highest view rates on our news page.
A huge shout-out to the Game Development Society for hosting a successful Global Game Jam, supported by our vice president Leah Thompson. A fantastic 117 participants collaborated to create 27 games, gaining valuable skills and portfolio-building experience.
The Computing Society is also making a difference. They recently inspired young pupils at Co-op Academy Fenton about careers in computing and tech by attending a careers fair. Furthermore, they launched a mentorship program, pairing 13 Staffs alumni with society members in fields like software engineering, cybersecurity, and AI.
Finally, our January Student Group Executive meeting, chaired by our vice president, Faran Sabir, was a productive gathering with 20 committee members representing 22 groups. Discussions centred around planning for September Welcome, open days, and future events, with most groups expressing a desire to attend and support to an even further degree. It’s clear that many of our committee volunteers genuinely care about supporting and improving the student welcome experience and supporting the university and the Students’ Union.
