We're celebrating our Student Group of the Month, January 2025 which has been award to Pokemon Society. Read about what they've been up and which group also received a special mention,
It’s that time again, where we welcome students back from the festive break, and take some time to celebrate the amazing work our student groups have done this month. Our groups have hit the ground running, hosting large events, brand new activities and exciting sessions.
Congratulations to January’s student group of the month: Pokémon Society
At the start of the month, the Pokémon Society hosted a large-scale tournament in LRV, for students on campus. Complete with support and videography from the Esports Society, the event was a huge success, with 30 players competing for first place, and numerous spectators popping along to support their friends and fellow members. This was a brand new type of event for the society, with so much planning and effort (beginning last summer!) from the committee to pull it all together.
The society have also hosted a villain themed event, in which each of the committee members acted as evil bosses, with members being part of one of four teams, battling other members to gain points for their team. The event was popular within the society, with all members enjoying the activities hosted.
We’re looking forward to seeing more new and exciting events from the Pokémon Society this academic year, so if you are interested in getting involved, you can find more information on their society webpage.
Honourable Mention:
January also saw the Games Development Society host the annual Global Games Jam in partnership with the University Games Department. This two day event took place in Cadman with over 140 students coming together to build playable games either as part of a team, or individually.
GDS have spent months planning this event and pulling out all of the stops to create a fun, exciting and vibrant event for students with a keen interest in games design and programming. After the event, 17 games were made and uploaded to the Global Games Jam site. If you would like to see what our students have created throughout the event, you can browse the GGJ website.
You can also have a look at the Games Development Society’s webpage for more information on what they get up to in their sessions and activities, as well as find information on how to get involved.
