So many groups have embraced their community spirit, with collaborative events, fun activities, and sessions, but Mario Kart Society has stood apart from the crowd to take this month's award
It’s November! And with the first semester well underway, Halloween is officially over and Mariah Carey will soon be coming out of hibernation for the festive period.
But before that happens, we wanted to look at some of the outstanding achievements our student groups have made and share with you all our pick for October’s Student Group of the Month!
October saw some incredible events, with Pokémon Society hosting a movie night in collaboration with the Anime and Manga Society and Cue Sports have raised just under £100 for the Dougie Mac Foundation. Amateur Dramatics Society hosted a Haunted Halls event with Reslife that had over 80 attendees, and Guild of Assassins hosted their first long game of the year. I could go on…
As you can probably imagine, with so many events happening and student-led groups going above and beyond for their members, it hasn’t made it easy to pick Society of the Month. (Which is great! It’s always exciting to see so many groups actively building a positive presence on campus) But there is one group that has stood out this month, and that’s the Mario Kart Society.
Since the start of the year, MKS have collaborated with the LGBTQ+ Network, Pokemon Society, Staffs Smash and MineStaffs to bring fun, memorable experiences to all students, as well as working with other universities to bring an inter-university competition to life. They have also had sustainability in mind, taking time to reflect on how they use their equipment and coming up with ways to reduce the amount of waste they produce by ditching the disposable batteries and purchasing rechargeable ones for their remotes.
On top of all of this, Mario Kart Society always have their members at the heart of what they do, creating a fun, inviting and supportive atmosphere where all students can feel welcome and part of a vibrant community of like-minded individuals. This level of care and consideration has not been limited to their own members, with the society creating opportunities for students on our London campus to get involved, and offering additional support to some of our new societies that have joined the gaming and Esports community, and even supporting many university-led events during welcome week.
Massive congratulations to the Mario Kart Society for achieving this month’s Student Group of the Month. If you are interested, feel free to visit their webpage to see what events and activites they have planned for this semester
Whilst deciding on which group should be Group of the Month, we also have some groups who, while may not have been chosen as this month’s winner, were certainly mentioned for their dedication and commitment to their groups.
Law Society, who have come back stronger than ever this year to create a positive space for students not just studying law, but who also have an interest in different aspects of the subject. From hosting mini-debate sessions, to providing impactful opportunities for their members and invite them along to hear first-hand experiences from industry professionals.
Christian Union were also among our shortlisted groups, for their dedication to offering safe, non-judgemental spaces for all students, going out of their way to put out drinks and snacks for students attending some of our LRV club nights and offer a space to have a chat for students who may be feeling lonely on campus.
Remember, if you’re group is going above and beyond for your members, please let us know. Send up your photos, drop us an email at studentengagement@staffs.ac.uk with your updates. We love to hear from you all and we love even more to be able to celebrate your achievements with you.
