Student Group(s) of the Month – December 2024
This year, we’ve seen some incredible events from our student groups, from fundraising, to carol singing which has made it so difficult to decide on just one student group to receive this month’s award; so, we haven’t.
Instead, we’re proud to recognise the collaborative efforts of a number of our groups who have worked together to bring wider opportunities to students beyond their own membership:
December 2024 Student Group(s) of the month are the collaborating groups that brought the latest Tavern event to life; RAMS, The Coven, LGBTQ+ Network, Folklore and Myth societies.
The returning Tavern welcomed nearly 100 students to a transformed Ember Lounge which transported attendees back to a night of yore, featuring games, quests and interactive activities such as tarot reading, spell jars and sword fighting! Even some of our Union Team Members got involved to help sprinkle some magic, with staff taking part in handing out quests from behind the bar whilst serving themed drinks, named by the student organisers.
Attendees were also treated to an array of stalls selling wares and crafts made by students' hands, all emcompassing the theme of the evening.
Well done to all of the groups involved in bringing Tavern back and congratulations on earning this month’s award.
Special Mentions
Whilst collaboration is the focus for this month’s award, it’s fitting to offer special mentions to others groups that have worked brilliantly together to host events:
All who have shown determination (and a lot of patience), to create memorable events for students.
GG is the result of the hard work, ingenuity and collaboration of not two or three – but 13 societies! It is a recurring gaming event designed for students who have a love for all things games, and it keeps growing in numbers and success with every event.
With activities and games from Staffs Smash, Fight Club, Mario Kart and Pokemon Society just to name a few, over 100 attendees enjoyed the marathon event which was truly the place to be; as well as enjoying their favourite games, students could also take part in a cosplay competition hosted by the Hoyo Society.
Our Amateur Dramatics Society hosted a variety show in aid of their chosen charity, Tourette’s Action, with support and performances from Glee Club and Dance Club. This event brought many challenges to the organisers, and at times it felt like the universe was against them. But the students powered through, giving the audience a night of drama, music, dance and comedy. And while the event didn’t quite go to plan, Am Dram, Glee and Dance Clubs should be incredibly proud of the resilience they have shown, offering a fun and eventful night for family, friends and students.
All organising committees have expressed keen interest in running more events like these in the future, so keep your eyes peeled on the What’s On page for upcoming dates. You really don’t want to miss out!
Congratulations to all of our collaborating societies, we recognise that working with partners can bring opportunity and challenge in equal measure and we’re super proud of the hard work, dedication and social activities that you brought to students through your events that so many have enjoyed.
Huge congratulations to all of our groups on your achievements. We look forward to seeing what fantastic events you all have planned in 2025!
