A message from Forensic Investigation student for Care Leavers' Week 2023.
October 25th to November 1st 2023 marks National Care Leavers' Week 2023 - an opportunity for us to celebrate those within our community who have spent time in care during their lives and recognise the areas that we - as a society - could support and champion care leavers more within their daily lives.
So, what classifies a care leaver?
A care leaver is any adult who has spent time in care (aka - living away from their parents) before the age of 1?8 - this could be with foster parents, other family members, in a care home, a residential school or secure accommodation.
What are the CLW2023 goals and priorities?
Become - the national charity for care leavers and children in care - want people and organisations to CARE more this year...
CARE stands for:
- Celebrate care leavers
- Amplify their voices
- Raise awareness of challenges
- Encourage change in policy and practice
Students Like Me: Meet Lillith!
"Hi there! I'm Lillith, a third-year student studying Forensic Investigation. Alongside my degree, I am the course rep for my class, a trustee of the Students' Union, and participate in sports teams. My University experience is currently quite exciting because I even run a society too! After hearing all that, would you believe that I actually dropped out of sixth form college? Eventually, I managed to get in by completing an online Access to Higher Education Diploma whilst also working full time and living independently. On top of that, I am also a care leaver! After dealing with social workers for 15 years and counting, you know I've got some serious skills in arguing my point! A pretty cool fact is that I'm only the third care leaver from my island to attend university in a while. And - if I had come to uni at 18 instead of 20 - I would have been the very first in two decades!"
